The room is named after the family for whom Slaugham was for many centuries a manorial estate, the De Warrenne’s. The first Earl de Warrenne was William, husband of William the Conqueror’s daughter, Gundrada. He was given Lewes and numerous other lands in Surrey and Sussex that had belonged to the defeated King Harold. The insignia that we use for the Chequers Inn, featuring the chequerboard, is the coat of arms of the De Warrenne family but also makes reference to pubs in former times being a form of bank or exchequer, where goods were exchanged or sold.
