The Chequers at Slaugham

The De Warrenne Room

The De Warrenne Room’s features include dark red upholstered banquettes, polished oak floors, beams and deep red walls covered with a wealth of tasteful and fascinating period memorabilia. Our Menus

The room is named after the family for whom Slaugham was for many centuries a manorial estate, the De Warrenne’s.  The first Earl de Warrenne was William, husband of William the Conqueror’s daughter, Gundrada.  He was given Lewes and numerous other lands in Surrey and Sussex that had belonged to the defeated King Harold.  The insignia that we use for the Chequers Inn, featuring the chequerboard, is the coat of arms of the De Warrenne family but also makes reference to pubs in former times being a form of bank or exchequer, where goods were exchanged or sold.

The Conservatory

Adjacent to the De Warrenne Room, the Conservatory is somewhere to enjoy the unspoilt beauty of the local landscape.  The Conservatory is a light, spacious room with panoramic views of our own walled-garden, the meadow beyond and ancient woodland.  It has fresh green walls and dark green upholstered banquettes, wooden tables and stripped oak floors. The perfect place to enjoy good food and the countryside while protected from the elements!
